The code Vatican greek 1087 introduces the reader into the heart of astronomy Byzantine , but opens at the same time , an extraordinary window on astronomy Greek and Roman . Composed in Constantinople in the first half of the fourteenth century , in the circle of Nicephorus Gregoras , this document opens up considerable time searching for the richness of its content : astronomical works of Theodore Metochites , treatises on the astrolabe of Gregoras , the comment Theon Alexandrian Ptolemy . It also contains an insert with the remains of an old edition of the Phenomena of Arato , richly illustrated and commented , extracts and preserves Catasterismi Eratosthenes with illustrations of the constellations of great beauty . An inscription in Arabic , on the sidelines of a piece of code , urges reflection on the contacts between the two worlds , Byzantine and Islamic .
