How he apprehended the Middle Ages the geographical area? A very large number of textual and figurative testimonies remain. But they are difficult to interpret; they often lead to anachronism or neglected because they express a book culture and symbolic concerns. The purpose of this manual is to show the richness, variety and the operational character of medieval reflections on geographical space. The first part develops a history of representations in connection with the transformation of the general cultural conditions, from the Middle Ages that collects the legacy of ancient science to the geographical humanism and the first manifestations of European expansion. Follows an anthology of often unpublished or little known documents, commented and classified according to a route from the place of the Earth in the cosmos to the technique of measuring parcels, through the reflections of medieval scholars of the living space and function maps, mapping of maritime areas, travel as a means of knowledge, the local mapping and analysis régionale.Les strive to not flatten the documents no a priori epistemological or interpretive. The links between these different fields and between theory and practice are constantly stressed, for a comprehensive approach to medieval reflections on land space. Patrick Gautier Dalché is Director of Research (CNRS, Institute for Research and history texts) and director of studies (École pratique des hautes études). Nathalie Bouloux is a lecturer at the University of Tours. Christiane Deluz is an honorary professor at the University of Tours. Fermon Paul is an associate professor of secondary education.
