Joseph Fischer's suggestion (1912) that the maps in New York Public Library's Codex Ebnerianus (MS MA 97) of Ptolemy's Geography were used as the models for those in the 1478 Rome edition has not before now been questioned. However, I find that the Ebner manuscript was not the model for that edition, and that another (now lost) manuscript, also produced by Donnus Nicolaus Germanus, was used in 1478. It does appear, though, that the world map in the Ebner manuscript was the model for an anonymous and undated printed Ptolemaic world map, of which two copies survive, whose source has puzzled scholars for some years.
