Smyrek, Volker (Author)
A mixing console is the nerve center of a studio or a sound system and therefore one of the main tools in audio engineering. The author Volker Smyrek, media engineering and technology historian, takes in the present document the history of this artifact from different angles under the microscope. The art historical considerations, it's more about the principle stages of development of the tube technology on the transistor technology to digital consoles, less certain manufacturers and brands, of which nevertheless play the main text in a certain role. In addition, it should go to the social history of the people who can bring this artifact in connection, above all, these are musicians, engineers and producers. From the 1920s-1970s there was a marked change from the "technician-engineer" to "musician-engineer" and the increasing use of the mixer in a musical context. With the digitization of audio technology, the sociological contexts have changed from the 1980s again - nowadays everyone has in principle the possibility of using a virtual recording studio to create professional recordings in the form of software and music mixdown. This can be seen as the cause of a profound change in the job description and self-image of musicians, engineers and producers who have now come to amateurs in direct competition.
