The figure of Antonio Stoppani (1824-1891), priest conciliatorista, scientist and great popularizer, has sparked renewed interest in recent years. Personage of great importance in the national culture and science, worked in a decisive stage for the emergence and consolidation of a united weaving his own biographical personality with that crucial to the history of the period. The author provides a portrait in the round route of intellectual Lombard geologist in order to enhance the versatility of interests that made it a prominent personality in strategic areas for the culture of the nineteenth century. First part of natural sciences such as geology, paleontology and evolution; but also in business fundamentals for economic growth and material of the newly unified country as the realization of the geological map of the Kingdom and the search for new fuels. In addition, he was the author of one of the most extraordinary editorial successes in science communication of the late nineteenth century, the beautiful country (1876), and protagonist of the battle between hardliners and conciliatoristi in the role of staunch advocate of reconciliation between religious culture and secular thought.
