This volume of ten essays presents a multifaceted exploration of the subject of fakes, forgeries, and frauds in premodern science, and it is the outcome of the Second Watson Seminar in the History of Material and Visual Science, held in June 2013 at the Museo Galileo in Florence. Cleverly titled, its combination exclamation/question mark evokes surprise and uncertainty, practically radiating a tone of incredulity. The stated aim of the editors is to examine a myriad of fakes on their own merit---that is, without the imposition of an overarching theme---in order to generate “surprises and new ways to look at this complex and fascinating question” (p. vi). Accordingly, each contribution in this rich and varied collection of essays re-explores textual, visual, and material primary sources to illuminate historical instances of ideas or things that were manipulated to form fictitious fabrications. The resulting volume indeed raises interesting questions about received notions of such stuff.
