The Berlin botanist and geneticist Elisabeth Schiemann has come with their scientific work, their women's political engagement and its consistent Christian commitment in recent years in various research contexts back into view. This volume brings together the talks of an interdisciplinary symposium at the Humboldt University of Berlin in 2010, to honor the life of this extraordinary woman duly supplemented with further contributions. Elisabeth Schiemann among the most important scientists of their time. She was one of the first female students and professors in Germany, belonged to the first generation of geneticists and is considered a pioneer of archaeobotany. She was active in the Confessing Church and actively resisted the Nazis. Mindful of their scientific competence and moral integrity she was instrumental in the revival of Sciences in 1945. Schiemann demonstrated an unwavering independence in thought and did not avoid complexity and responsibility.
