The judgments of Athanasius Kircher (1602-1680) always were already apart. Galt he the one as a scientific anomaly, accused him others charlatanism. Did he himself at the service of the Catholic restoration or he was the last polymath? That disagreement about until today, the story is due in its double meaning - the history of Kircher's life and work as well as their presentation as a story. With the cultural turn of the history of science away from the question of the validity premodern knowledge towards the conditions of its production and validity, interest in Kircher grew as interesting character of knowledge in the republic of letters of the 17th century. The collection of essays explores the conditions under which Kircher played his roles as a scholar in papal Rome and as a Jesuit in the age of "scientific revolution". The contributions examine Kircher aesthetics of knowledge presentation, the design of his works in the context of Baroque literary culture, his strategies of prestige and patronage as well as the interest of history and pop culture to Kircher as a counter-figure to modernity. It is always also about Kircher not presented as autonomous actor, but to understand the person and work as a product of cultural factors and social interests. Contradictions in the assessments Kircher can - and should - be affected by the fact not completely. As a reflection of these perspectives, the study in fact rather contribute to a better understanding of the cultural history of knowledge. At the same time they lead right into the Theatrum Kircherianum, the fascinating and exotic world of foreign knowledge Athanasius Kircher.
