A protégé of Cardinal Richelieu, Jacques Gaffarel (1601-1681) was a learned Orientalist, respected by leading minds of the time such as Pierre Gassendi. Heavily influenced by the Renaissance vision of world history, "prisca theologia" and Christian Cabala, his "Curiositez Inouyes" (1629) was a controversial work on talismans, horoscopes and astrology ascribed to the "ancient Hebrews." The present volume of six interdisciplinary essays aims to provide the first substantial survey of Gaffarel's work and influence. His views on Cabala, magic and natural philosophy, world history and other disciplines will be studied in their own historical and intellectual context. In doing so, this volume seeks to place Gaffarel on the intellectual map at the dawn of the Scientific Revolution. Contents: Foreword; "Concealed Mysteries" and "Unheard-of Curiosities": Jacques Gaffarel's Defence of Celestial Writing and Divine Kabbalah (Peter Forshaw); Jacques Gaffarel e gli "Abdita divinae cabalae mysteria" (Saverio Campanini); Figures des téraphim, entre causalités, intention du culte et supports de croyance: Gaffarel orientaliste (Frédéric Gabriel); La réception des "Curiositez inouyes" par Gassendi et Mersenne (Sylvie Taussig); Images, Talismans and Medicine in Jacques Gaffarel (Hiro Hirai); Resemblance and Figure in Garden and Laboratory: Gaffarel's Influence on John Evelyn (Juliet Odgers); Index
