In 1572 and 1604 appeared in the European sky two new stars, the only two galactic supernova recorded in modern times; also between those years and until 1618 there were numerous comets. In these "heavenly news" has recognized an important factor in the process of destruction of Aristotelian kósmos and the idea of immutability traditionally granted to the sky. However, the debate on such phenomena exceeded the scope of scientific disciplines, because in a few years when the apocalyptic consciousness was very strong, were seen as heralding signs of the second coming of Christ and the end of the world. It is not surprising, therefore, that the political powers will collect reports astronomers and astrologers, and churchmen, theologians and physicians published writings on the influence of these wonders in politics and religion, as well as the destination humanity at the final time in history. The works collected in this volume study addressing this vast discussion, from an interdisciplinary perspective, both cosmological and astronomical aspects as its connection with the political and religious sphere in the dramatic years between the massacre of Saint Bartholomew and the outbreak the Thirty Years' War.
