Martins, Roberto de Andrade (Author)
Albrecht Dürer's woodblock of a rhinoceros, produced in 1515, was a landmark both in art and in zoology. That representation, containing several mistakes, became the standard image of the rhinoceros for two centuries, strongly influencing naturalists and the whole culture of the period. Europeans only became aware of the real appearance of a rhinoceros during the 18th century. This paper analyses the history of the rhinoceros represented by Dürer, comparing it with other works of the same time, and the likely sources of his blunders. The article employs this case study to point out historiographical errors on this subject and to contemplate several methodological issues of the history of science.
