Back to the True Zhongjing: Translation of an excerpt of the Zhongjing guizhen, 1849 (2013)

unapi

The short excerpt translated below comes from the Zhongjing guizhen (Back to the True Zhongjing), which is sometimes referred to as the Shanghan lun Guizhen (Back to the True Cold Damage Treatise). This medical text was written by Chen Huantang , a medical practitioner from Dongguan, Guangdong. It was prefaced by Jiang Shencun in 1849 and published the same year for the first time. As the book's title suggests, Chen's target was to recover the true meaning of Zhang Zhongjing's Cold Damage Treatise that, according to him, had been misinterpreted by successive medical authors. The three first chapters of this seven-chapter book are devoted to pinpoint the misinterpretations and mistakes that, according to Chen, had led to the clinical mistakes that in his times were still widespread. While for Chen, Wang Shuhe (ca. 180--270) was the first author to have misled people, because of his own arrangements of the original treatise, however, the real beginning of the popularization of Zhang Zhongjing's text and ideas in a mistaken way came, in Chen's view, from Tao Jieyan (Tao Hua, ca. 1369--1463) and Zhang Jingyue (Zhang Jiebin, ca. 1563--1640). This short excerpt has been selected for translation because of the unique way this doctor argued to convince his readership by both conventionally drawing on quotations from the Inner Canon (Neijing) and exceptionally comparing the anatomy of humans with that of animals he has cut open.
