School statistics became a major issue in the Seine department between 1865 and 1914 as the republican school model was being implemented. The official, quantified representation of the condition of Parisian school education was affected by some statistical bias, and influenced by the reformers who wanted to see compulsory schooling being enforced. In contrast to the declared aim of reform, the comparison of official statistics to those that can be reconstructed from the archives reveals a more contrasted situation, as well as the negative side effects of an elitism emblematic of the school meritocracy that had prevailed since the mid-1860s.
