Language: French

This paper introduces three studies in historical demography on 18th and 19th-century Charleville (now Charleville-Mézières). In this small town of northern France, municipal authorities performed an annual census of the inhabitants from the late-17th century to the early 20th century. Under the aegis of the Agence Nationale de la Recherche, a project has been launched to enter all available historical information on the town's population and society into a database, and to conduct a general study on demography, migrations, co-residence and family relations in Charleville. Preceding papers by Cristina Munno on the crisis of 1740-1742, Stéphane Minvielle on household structure, and Fabrice Boudjaaba and Vincent Gourdon on urban mobility, this article presents the main characteristics of this commercial and industrious city, which was independent from the French Crown until the early 18th century. It also explains which sources are available and how the database was designed and implemented.
