The centenary of Marcelin Berthelot's (1827-1907) birth was celebrated in France with an extensive program including the establishment of the Maison de la Chimie. Learned societies, academic institutions and governments were invited to contribute. The Turkish Minister of Education, together with the Istanbul University organized a conference to commemorate Marcelin Berthelot to coincide with the program in Paris. The meeting held on November 3rd 1927 was chaired by Fuat Köprülü, Vice-Rector and Dean of the Faculty of Literature representing the Minister of Education Mustafa Necati Bey. The staff of the Chemistry Department of Faculty of Sciences, Profs. Ömer evket Öncel, Nazmi Asaf, and Marius Faillebin lectured on aspects of M. Berthelot's life and oeuvre. The French Consule générale represented his Government. A special issue of the Journal of the Istanbul University Faculty of Sciences (Darülfünun Fen Fakültesi Mecmuas , vol. 3, 1927) was also dedicated to Marcelin Berthelot. Prof.Dr. Cevat Mazhar and Prof. Ligor Bey, from the Chemistry Department of the Faculty of Sciences, compiled articles on Berthelot's fields of interest and research, from organic synthesis to thermochemistry, explosives, soil chemistry, fermentation and metabolism, and history of chemistry and alchemy. The special issue aimed at a general readership and was distributed during the memorial conference at the Istanbul University. This publication remained largely unknown due to its limited edition, and represents an interesting phase in the history of Turkish chemistry.
