Buisman, J. W. (Author)
The relationship between Enlightenment and religion is still a matter of some debate. For one is the Enlightenment the rallying of all anti religiosity, for others they just trying to adapt traditional Christianity to the modern secular thinking. Lighting in the Netherlands 1650-1850 paints a nuanced and often surprising picture - helped by the generally moderate character of the historical Enlightenment in the Netherlands. Exciting it is especially when the dichotomy between reason and religion is released. With all his rationalism Spinoza lived for example in a mystical time: he was himself surrounded by 'free' Christians for whom the new reasonableness was not a threat, but rather a challenge. And a hundred years later was even a minister on record as an enlightened friend of black men. Using a combination of historical essays and source texts would Lighting in the Netherlands 1650-1850 in well-lit way readers let judge.
