This chapter focuses on the attitudes toward the Lamarckian aspect of soft inheritance. It argues that there is little conflict between the evolutionary thinking of geneticists and of other biologists in Great Britain between the 1930s and the 1970s. First, it examines the renewed confidence in Darwin's gradualism and the dismissal of soft inheritance in British evolutionary thinking beginning in the 1930s and especially during the Second World War. Next, it examines the changing views and willingness to accept of soft-inheritance during the 1950s and early 1960s. Finally, the chapter describes how researches in molecular genetics influence evolutionists'views about soft inheritance.
