Drouin, Jean-Marc (Author)
Young and countless insects and other terrestrial arthropods are an essential component of biodiversity and contribute decisively to the functioning of terrestrial ecosystems. Also their study she has played a pioneering role in the revival of the classification and in the observation of animal behavior. She finds herself at the forefront in research areas such as evolutionary biology, behavioral ecology, molecular genetics. Beyond the only scientific studies, philosophy in these living beings a radically different form of animal from that familiar. And fascinating forms of social life and collective intelligence that some insects have developed during evolution. It is also necessary to question the relevance of the terms used to describe the social Insects - society, sovereign monarchy, republic, workers, all of questionable images of human societies forcing us to question our spontaneous anthropomorphism. The World of Insects eventually so distant from ours, if only because of the scale effects, it forces us to rethink the very notions of people and backgrounds. Finally, thinking about insects, often inconvenient partners and fairly unpredictable opponents, causing the rejection often as compassion, contributes to the debate on the foundations of an ethically thoughtful attitude towards animals. Jean-Marc Drouin is a historian and philosopher of science, was a professor in philosophy of science at the Natural History Museum. He is the author of numerous articles and several books, including The Herbarium philosophers, Seuil, 2008.
