The use of sines is an indispensible tool in the computation of planetary position in Indian astronomy, and Sanskrit astronomical treatises include tables of sines or sine differences for this reason. The Siddh ntasundara of Jñ nar ja, composed around 1500 AD, contains two versified tables, a table of sines and a table of sine differences. In addition to the tables and explanation of their use, Jñ nar ja offers a rationale of the first table, which is unique in Indian astronomy.
