This article examines the history of teleological thinking in antiquity, the period after Aristotle, analyzing three major episodes: the work of Theophrastus - a collaborator and successor of Aristotle; Stoicism, described by Cicero in his work On the Nature of the Gods ; and the anatomical and physiological work of Galen, especially his book On the usefulness of parts of the human body . This analysis shows the wide variety of attitudes about the final causes in antiquity, distinct from Aristotle, and the strong influence of religious concerns in some of these thinkers - how the Stoics and Galen.
