Published anonymously in 1844, the book Vestiges of the natural history of creation (Vestiges of the Natural History of Creation) triggered one of the fiercest public discussions that occurred during the nineteenth century. Its author, Robert Chambers (1802-1871), defended the transmutation of living beings. The purpose of this article is to discuss some "evolutionary" concepts present in this work. This research led to the conclusion that Chambers proposed that the transmutation of species occurs through natural laws, slow and progressive manner. Following the empiricist tradition, sought to corroborate their ideas through evidence from the fossil record, as the knowledge of the time. We believe that the low acceptance of the proposed Chambers was mainly due to non-epistemic factors.
