Der Aufstieg der Wissenschaft und die Verbreitung der Demokratie wirken wie zwei leicht phasenverschobene Erfolgsgeschichten, die mit dem Ende des Kalten Krieges ihren Höhepunkt erreicht haben. Es gilt als ausgemacht, dass humane Wissenschaft nur unter den Bedingungen der Demokratie gedeihen kann; umgekehrt soll Wissenschaft die Demokratie qua Expertise unterstützen. Allerdings stehen wir heute vor neuen Herausforderungen: Wie sollen Demokratien angesichts des Klimawandels reagieren? Ist Bioethik ein Garant für demokratische Partizipation oder nur Alibi der Biomedizin? Welche Konsequenzen hat die Ökonomisierung der Forschung im akademischen Kapitalismus?
