Edition Details: Translated title: [Particle Accelerators in Istanbul University Faculty of Science] In Turkish.
Language: Turkish

The discovery of subatomic particles led to the rising of new disciplines such as particle physics and nuclear physics, and accelerators began to be built from 1932 on. In Turkey, a first attempt to install a particle accelerator dates back to late 1940s. A Philips 800 keV Cockcroft-Walton Generator (cascade accelerator) was installed in the Physics Department of Istanbul University's Faculty of Science in 1949. The purchase and the installation of a cyclotron, came to fore in 1954. Aimed to produce radioisotopes needed in medical and agricultural fields, this cyclotron would be installed in the Faculty of Science. Although the project was budgeted, it could not be realized: Following Turkey's participation to the Atoms for Peace program, all nuclear activities were gathered under the umbrella of the Atomic Energy Commission established in 1955. Nuclear research was thus undertaken by institutions affiliated to the commission. Therefore, the purchase of an accelerator for a university was probably regarded as unnecessary. Key words: Accelerator, Cockcroft-Walton accelerator, neutron generator, cyclotron, Istanbul University Faculty of Science, history of physics, particle physics, Fahir Yeniçay, Atomic Energy Commission, nuclear physics.
