The Continuing Vitality of the Problématique of Vitalism? (2014)

This collection of articles comes in the wake of a number of previous studies, special issues and conference proceedings that dealt with conceptions of vitalism primarily during the eighteenth century, several of which were initiated by Charles Wolfe in collaboration with others. Thus, one should look upon the present volume as in some ways the summation of an agenda to bring what I would define as the problématique of vitalism back into the history and philosophy of the life sciences. From that perspective one can then ask Why has there been this continuing effort? Besides the easy answer of recovering a significant historical strain and its continuing semi-subterranean existence, I believe that it points to a concern with discussions of `life' and/or living entities particularly in contradistinction to non-living entities.
