Kaum etwas prägt unser Leben so sehr wie die Technik". Dieses Diktum des Philosophen Hans Poser steht in scharfem Gegensatz zur marginalen Beachtung, welche die Technik in der traditionellen Geschichtswissenschaft gefunden hat. Nur wenige bekannte Historiker wie Karl Lamprecht und Franz Schnabel bildeten hierbei eine Ausnahme. Andere wie Jörn Rüsen und Reinhard Rürup verwiesen auf den Stellenwert der Technik für die geschichtliche Entwicklung. Daneben entstand eine zunächst von Ingenieuren, dann von Historikern getragene Disziplin "Technikgeschichte". Die hier versammelten "Basistexte" dokumentieren die Entwicklung der Technikgeschichte von einem ingenieurwissenschaftlichen zu einem historischen Fach und bieten einen Überblick über ihre zentralen Fragestellungen.
