Der Epochenübergang von der Vormoderne in die Moderne wird durch die Industrielle Revolution markiert. Einen anschaulichen Überblick über die Grundzüge dieser die "westliche Welt" prägenden Entwicklung bietet die vorliegende Einführung. Ausgehend von der Agrarrevolution des 18. Jahrhunderts und der Vorreiterrolle Großbritanniens werden die Industrialisierungsprozesse in den verschiedenen europäischen Nationen und Regionen sowie in Nordamerika und Japan im 19. und frühen 20. Jahrhundert beschrieben. Der Autor verdeutlicht, welche grundlegenden Veränderungen die Industrielle Revolution nicht nur in den wirtschaftlichen und sozialen Strukturen, sondern auch in den politischen und kulturellen Gegebenheiten unserer Welt bewirkt hat. Darüber hinaus zeigt er, dass sogenannte Schwellen- und Entwicklungsländer bis in die unmittelbare Gegenwart ähnliche Entwicklungen durchlaufen.
