unapi

The article discusses the historiography of ecclesiastical censorship of science during the sixteenth-century in Italy. It discusses access to the Roman Inquisition records from 1543 to 1808 held by the Archives of the Congregation of the Doctrine of Faith, made freely available in 1998. Work of historians including Ugo Baldini, Leen Spruit, and Andrew Dickson White are considered. Topics considered include the Catholic Church and intellectual freedom, the Reformation and Counter-Reformation, and the trials of 16th-century scientists and philosophers including Giordano Bruno, Tommaso Campanella, and Galileo Galilei.
