Using the topics of natural history and botanical research done in Jamaica during the eighteenth century, the article explores how such knowledge was translated in speech. It considers oral culture in the communication in science, historical geography, and the British Atlantic world. Topics considered include printed texts, science and imperialism, the cross-cultural communication of traditional ecological knowledge, and slavery. The relationship between Scottish doctor and Jamaican botanist William Wright and English naturalist and botanist Sir Joseph Banks is explored.
