The article demonstrates the way artificial intelligence science has passed since the 1950s up to now. The work concerns the important development stages of AI in Ukraine and the world. In particular, the work highlights the history of AI as the history of neurocomputers, heuristic programs and chess programs; history of biological cybernetics and evolution of the theory of pattern recognition and speech recognition. The article illustrates scientific contribution to this problem by native scientists N.M. Amosov, V.A. Kovalevsky, M.I. Schlesinger, T.K. Vintsiuk, M.M. Botvinnik, D.A. Pospelov and T.A. Taran. There are provided materials showing that the domestic reading machine CHARS was not inferior to similare of Western standards, while remaining economical. The author examines the development of softwareinterlocutors and expert systems.
