The article is devoted to the activities of genius designer and inventor, a national of the Russian Empire, Boris Lutzky, during his stay in the German town of Harburg. Purpose of the article -- to fill the research gaps in the history of the life and work of Boris Lutzky, which is associated with the period of his activities in the town of Harburg. These engines have become the prototype of all modern in-line vertical internal combustion engine in which the crankshaft is located below the cylinder. This unique architecture of the internal combustion engine remained under the title Hammer of type system of Lutzky in the history of engine-building. It is established that the engines of Boris Lutzky differed from the engines produced by other designers and companies of the time very low gas consumption.
