Where during the nineteenth century, a growing interest in the history of mathematics in Europe , may Henri Bosmans simply the intellectual father of this tradition are called in Belgium. He was born in Mechelen in 1852 and joined the Jesuit order in 1871 . After a brief period in Namur , he is assigned to the St. Barbara College Ghent where he taught mathematics , physics and chemistry . In Ghent, he came into contact with the mathematician Paul Mansion (1879-1919) , where he continues to proficient in mathematics. This would give a decisive orientation to further his career . It was only in 1894 that he sends an initial contribution on the history of mathematics under a pseudonym . His first piece under his own name dates from 1900 . What started as a hesitant entry into scientific publications , by asking and answering questions in L' Intermediate Mathematic des Parisiens , grew to an impressive collection of contributions that attest erudition and meticulous research . Eventually he became a prolific author who could write with confidence about the issues that matter most to him were the heart sciences at the Jesuits and early modern mathematics. He quickly gained respect and appreciation of international colleagues , and not the least : David Eugene Smith , Moritz Cantor , John Tropfke , Florian Cajori , Gino Loria , Gustav ENESTRÖM and Paul Tannery . Some of these he considered his friends . Until his death in 1928 published nearly 300 scientific publications , ranging from brief comments to articles with archive material 200 pages intakes. Moreover, he even published so many reviews of books and articles . He was never afraid to return it to take a very critical position opposite to ENESTRÖM who had been committed to breaking down the work of Cantor .
