Paul Tannery , the French historian of mathematics and delivery of the works of Descartes , was over a century ago, an ardent advocate for cooperation in a general history of science. Committees for the history of the various fields of science were extremely useful and historical lectures on physics or mathematical congress had his consent , but to help advance the science of history was in his eyes a different strategy is required . His ideal was that the historians of the various sciences would visit each other and strengthen the historical approach and that they would look at the general history . Connection " Synthesis " was his keyword . The elements that were obtained from careful historical analysis , to be presented in a carefully composed linked, otherwise the result was not worth the name of history. Tannery wanted such a ' general history ' organization in education, magazines and associations . He stood in the first years of the twentieth century, not only in his plea .
