The author discusses the popularity of endocrinology at this time, explores why physicians believed that glands and hormones were interconnected with longevity, and analyzes the relationship between hormone sciences and eugenics. The role of doctors Harry Benjamin and John R. Brinkley and novelist Gertrude Atherton in the popularity of endocrine studies is also examined.
