Mrs. Dr. Friederike Sorger (1914--2001) was an Austrian botanist and plant collector. Born and educated in Vienna, she settled at Linz in 1947, lived there till 1972. Then she returned to Vienna where she lived until the end of her life. She visited Turkey 29 times between 1962 and 1988, prepared a collection of 18.000 specimens that she deposited at the herbarium (L1) of the Ober-Österreichisches Landesmuseum at Linz (Speta 1994 and 2002). She gave her material at the disposal of P.H. Davis, who was preparing in Edinburgh his Flora of Turkey. In recognition, Davis dedicated to her the ninth volume of his Flora. In the nine volumes (1965--1985) of Flora of Turkey and its two supplements (1988 and 2000), we counted 2095 specimens of Sorger, collected from 60 provinces between 1960 and 1985. No specimens of 1972, 1975 and 1979 are cited in the Flora. We found only one specimen (vol 8:448) from 1960 and one (vol 4:218) from 1961. We are doubtful about these two dates, because Sorger herself writes that she travelled to Turkey for the first time in 1962. Speta also declares that Sorger came to Turkey between 1962 and 1988. The itineraries of Sorger's travels are given in Speta's article dated 1994. Sorger has collected 66 Turkish type specimens between 1963 and 1984. About half of them are named and described by Kit Tan et Sorger. 14 taxa bear in their names the epithets sorgerae and fridericae. Sorger's publications are all related to Turkish plants. A group of them enumerates the additional taxa to the published volumes of the Flora, as the series of Beiträge zur Flora der Türkei I-VII (1971-1987). Another group exposes the pictures in colour of many Turkish plants, as Blumen der Türkei, pp. 103-271 (1994), Einige Endemiten aus der Türkischen Pflanzenwelt im Bild (1998), Pflanzen einiger Salzsteppen der Türkei im Bild (2000). In her two earlier articles, published in Apollo 12: 3-4 (1968) and in J. Scott. Rock Gard. Club 12(3): 221-225 (1971), Sorger relates her botanical observations about the Anatolian mountains she has visited. A.H. Çolak has translated in Turkish the three illustrated books of Sorger, brought them together, and adding an article of his own, a list of botanical terms and a list of Latin words with their equivalents in Turkish, produced a large book he titled Türkiye Çiçekleri (Flowers of Turkey) in 2004. He accepted it as the enlarged second edition of Blumen der Türkei.
