Sir Alfred Charles Bernard Lovell, who died on 6 August at the age of 98, was a pioneer of radio astronomy. He is known as the founder of the Jodrell Bank Observatory and built its telescope, which bears his name. Fifty-five years after its inauguration, the Lovell telescope remains one of the largest steerable telescopes in the world.
