Relations among European philosophies and practices of species assesment during the decades aroudn the turn of the 18th century. Global commerce and colonization raised pressing questions about the possibility of contriving reasoned mechanisms of equivalence and discrimination. Botanical debates are used to illuminate the species question in other domains, espeically human variation and political enconomy.
