On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of his discovery of deuterium and the 25th anniversary of his death, this article summarizes the life and career of Harold Clayton Urey (1893--1981), with emphasis on deuterium and his 1934 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, work on the Manhattan Project, paleotemperatures, cosmochemistry, planetary science, the origin of the universe and of life in it, and the Miller--Urey experiment.
