The article discusses the role of technology transfer in the Spanish paper industry between 1800 and 1936. According to the author, the transfer of modern papermaking technology to Spanish workshops reflects a larger Spanish dependence on foreign industries. Emphasis is given to areas such as the Basque Country, Catalonia, and the Valencian Region which had a high density of papermaking workshops. It is suggested that these industrial regions succeeded because they had other specializations in addition to papermaking. Also discussed are the education of the Spanish workforce, the Industrial Revolution, mechanization, and industrial district dynamics.
