The article examines the medical practice of the physician Franz von Ottenthal in the Tauferer Ahrntal (Aurina Valley) of South Tyrol, Italy, in the 1860s, in order to determine the role of obstetric services among the portfolio of medical care offered by rural physicians in the 19th century. The author details the relationship and competition between different providers of obstetric services in the health care market of the Tauferer Ahrntal, especially general practitioners and midwives. She then provides a quantitative analysis of von Ottenthal's patients.
