Vandersmissen, Jan (Author)
The article discusses the recognition of the Congo Free State at the Congress of Berlin, from 1884 to 1885, at which international diplomacy formalized the colonial ownership of the Congo as a colony of Belgium. Topics include exploration and scientific inventories of resources in the Congo; the work of engineers in developing Western infrastructure on the land; and engineering as a profession during the early period of colonization of the country. Also discussed is the variety of source material from which the author draws conclusions on colonial themes and early engineering projects in the Congo.
