Glyph G and the Yohualteuctin: Recovering the Mesoamerican Practice of Time Keeping and Nightly Astrology (2007/2008)

In the search for architectural alignments to celestial events or hieroglyphic records of observational anomalies, some of the more rudimentary aspects of ancient Mesoamerican astronomy seem to have been overlooked. This paper takes up perhaps the most mundane of a sky watcher's job duties: telling time. The argument presented here is that Central Mexican codices and Classic Maya hieroglyphic records support a radial partitioning of the night sky. In particular, the Aztec Lords of the Night and the Maya Glyphs G appear to have constituted a framework for counting off the nine hours of the night
