This paper updates earlier fieldwork conducted at one early period site in southern highland Mexico and critiques that done by colleagues at another. Revised archaeological dates for Building J. Monte Alb n, render the originally proposed alignment with Capella and the concurrence of the date of heliacal rising of that star with the passage of the Sun across the zenith still viable; though the possibility of the connection of these phenomena with a zenith tube in Building P, along that alignment, is weakened by the likelihood that the latter was part of a series of vertical caches. Finally, alignments at San Jos Mogote purported to correlate with an early date on a stela at that site are challenged.
