The new book by Carlos Gomez-Centurion is a rarity among modern history studies published in Spain. Known for his previous work on such classics as the Armada and the Spanish Royal House, the author surprises us now with this substantial monograph on the animals that lived in the Royal Sites in the modern age. It addresses a topic neglected so far in our country and introduces a new disciplinary field of Animal-the-History, currently all the rage in other latitudes. Sovereign's jewelery is a careful and thorough investigation of the wide variety of animals that desire of kings and their families settled in the gardens of the Royal Sites and inside the Alcázar, then Royal Palace. Among them were the beasts (lions, tigers, bears, eagles) of "Leonera" Buen Retiro, ostriches, swans and exotic fish of Aranjuez, pheasants of the House, the camels and elephants, with more or less successful, stayed at the Spanish court during different periods and a lot of pets, including songbirds, parrots, monkeys and dogs. Professor Gomez-Centurion reconstructed virtually all aspects of the origin, acquisition, transfer, use and care of these animals, systematically using the extensive documentation preserved in the Archivo General de Palacio, although there are some inroads into the Archive of the Indies, the National Historic and the Simancas
