In the fall of 1911, Ernest Sachs-the first American specifically trained to be a neurological surgeon-joined the surgical faculty of the Washington University School of Medicine with the task of developing a neurosurgery program. Through brilliance and persistence, he succeeded, becoming the pioneer neurosurgeon in the lower Midwest, and in 1919 the world's first professor of neurosurgical surgery. And his work launched a neurosurgery service that in 2011 celebrated its 100th anniversary as one of the leading academic training programs in the United States and in the world.
