Combining the method of textual research with comparative analysis, this article discusses some issues about Lyell's Principles of Geology and other treatises deriving from Principles of Geology, analyzes the relationship of Lyell's different Geological treatises, and corrects some popular inaccurate statements. Moreover this article also researches the contents of Principles of Geology and Elements of Geology, analyzes their changes in different editions of Elements of Geology, and comes to the conclusion that both treatises above mentioned are all very important for understanding Lyell's Geology not only in aspect of the knowledge but in the method. The knowledge in Dixue Qianshi translated in Late Qing Dynasty is just a part of Lyell' Geology, but Lyell updated the Geological information of discovery continually so that it reflected the most advanced western knowledge of geology at that time.
