The article assesses whether the economy of the South was capitalist or pre-capitalist by analyzing of the impact of the Western and Atlantic Railroad on the development of the Georgia upcountry. With improved transportation, the capitalist orientation of the residents became clear when they participated in a capitalist system of production and exchange. The changing agricultural output and demographics proved that farmers living in the area also became market-oriented capitalist producers.
