Babylonian surveyors and mathematicians found two apparently equivalent algorithms to calculate the area of the circle, but we do not know which procedure they would have used to discover them. The similarity of these formulae with the solution of Archimedes should not make us think that also both methodologies used by Babylonians and Greeks were identical. In this paper we discuss the issues that this case raises.
