The question of the relationship between religion and sciences in Byzantium was crucial from the first days of the establishment of the Byzantine state. In this paper we examine certain aspects of this relationship as they are revealed through two scientific texts for higher education: the ??s???pt?? s??ta?mua (Quadrivium) (1008 A.D.), the oldest teaching manual rescued from the Byzantine era, and the S??ta?mua t?? tess???? mua??mu?t?? (Syntagma) by George Pachymeres (c. 1300 A.D.), written during the era known as Palaiologian Renaissance. These two texts, which are on the sciences of the quadrivium (arithmetic, geometry, astronomy, music), describe, among other things, the stance that a Christian ought to adopt with respect to both Christian faith and science. Pivotal in the efforts of both authors to legitimize sciences and scientific education are their attempts to prove that sciences do not contradict Christian faith, and important in the analysis of the religion-science relationship in Byzantium are the changes we mark on their respective perceptions of this typically difficult relationship.
