In vielen Ländern Europas rückt die Kolonialzeit wieder stärker ins öffentliche Bewusstsein. Dabei gerät eine Praxis der Wissenschaft um 1900 in den Blickpunkt: das Sammeln von menschlichen Schädeln und Skeletten für eine wertende und hierarchisierende physische Anthropologie. Vermehrt wird nun von den Nachkommen oder von politischen Institutionen die Rückgabe der sterblichen Überreste gefordert. Die Beiträge des Sammelbands ergeben ein umfassendes Bild dieses viel diskutierten Themenkomplexes. Die Autorinnen und Autoren skizzieren die Geschichte der entsprechenden Sammlungen, erläutern Methoden der Provenienzforschung und gehen auf die vielschichtigen Aspekte von Restitutionen ein. Es ist das erste Buch, das im deutschen Sprachraum die Thematik der Human Remains vor dem Hintergrund anstehender Rückgabeforderungen ausführlich behandelt.
