Johann Christoph Gatterer (1727 1799) verkörpert die deutsche Aufklärungshistorie wie kein anderer. Zehn Universalgeschichtskompendien, begleitet von Handbüchern zur Genealogie, Diplomatik, Chronologie, Heraldik, Statistik und mehrere zur Geographie, verfasste er. Er gründete zwei moderne Fachzeitschriften und das erste geschichtswissenschaftliche Institut überhaupt. Darüber hinaus betrieb er Meteorologie und suchte Botanik zu verwissenschaftlichen. Geschichte "im ganzen Umfange" war das Motto seiner Universalhistorie und seines Instituts. Es ging ihm um Historie als präzisierte Wissenschaft. Das Buch beschreibt die Geschichtskonstruktion Gatterers in ihren Teilen und im Zusammenhang eine uns fremde Welt des Konstruierens, nicht des Erzählens, in deren Architektur die moderne Geschichtsschreibung eingezogen ist.
